A question we are often asked by folks who are planning to go fulltime is which type of RV is best. One thing you learn quickly when searching for your first RV is there is no best type. At least not that someone else can decide for you.
Each type has advantages and disadvantages. Whether you choose a motorhome, fifth wheel or travel trailer and even what size is very much a personal choice based on individual preference, needs and budget along with weighing the advantages against disadvantages.
As an example we know a couple who have full time RVed for a year in a 17' travel trailer, Few RVers would consider it suited for the full time lifestyle. But when they bought the little trailer it was the largest or heaviest trailer they could safely tow with their car.
When we last talked to them they had recently purchased a pickup so towing a bigger trailer is possible and, in fact, they were thinking of getting a larger trailer. Even so, they have been living in it for a year already and were having a great time being full time RVers.
The couple may not be typical but they are not alone. We've seen many folks full timing in unusual rigs. Some even smaller. My point is that it doesn’t matter what kind, how big or if it’s full time rated, any RV is a full time rig if it's suits your needs.
Our recommendation has always been to visit RV sales lots and RV show and look at a lot of different types and sizes of RVs. You should, after a while, begin to develop a preference for a particular type of RV.
We also recommend that you consider buying a used or less expensive RV and plan to trade it for your dream RV after a year or two. After living the lifestyle for a while you’ll have a much feel for the kind of RV that will suit you best.
The ‘which type is best’ question is almost always followed buy ‘what’s a good brand?’
We always recommend to RVers considering the purchase of a new rig join the RV Consumers Group. http://RV.org. The group’s RV rating book and other publications are invaluable when it comes to helping choose a rig based on construction and resale value etc.
Membership is about $100 to $140 but RVers who have joined report it has saved them much more by helping them get the best rig at the best price.
A rig with superior construction and materials will in theory be better for full time use but remember good construction is not limited to any specific type of RV.
And remember, never let anyone tell you which kind of RV is best for full time RVing.
RV Bookstore has a wide range of books and DVDs for would-be fulltimers.
