Words & Wisdom
(but sometimes just words)

By Chuck Woodbury

If you are a full-time RVer you are not alone. A recent article in the Christian Science Monitor focused on the growing number of Americans who travel with RVs with no plan to return to what they term a "stick and brick" house. In order to save money, avoid property-related annoyances or simply maximize good times, they're choosing to live in their rolling rigs year-round in a world where many jobs and creature comforts no longer require a permanent address. For some baby boomers, the newspaper reported, "the RV has become the new Harley Davidson -- a symbol of nomadic freedom."

While no one knows the precise number of full-timers, the Monitor reports that estimates range from 200,000 to one million. But the newspaper concluded that "experts who follow the subculture agree that the ranks are steadily growing as baby boomers reach retirement age."

My friend the Milky Way
Most RVers have experienced the exhilarating experience of gazing into the night sky and seeing what seem to be millions and millions of stars, including those in our own Milky Way -- so thick they seem to be a distant cloud. Here is a short essay I wrote and then recorded after returning to my campsite after one "Milky Way experience." You will need Quicktime to hear this 30-second audio recording.

"Green" RVs -- not quite there, but interest is high
Last week, the Bend, Ore., Bulletin newspaper profiled a 28 year-old full-time RVer who is traveling the country promoting "green RVing."

He says he's been surprised by all the positive reactions and the amount of people who already have biodiesel on their minds. "Every RVer I've met is concerned about the future and the environment," said Ty Adams. "They are touring state parks and getting into nature and places that are enhanced by a pristine environment, so they are very aware."

Even though RVs have a long ways to go to get more environmentally friendly, the newspaper reports that progress is being made. According to Matt Howard of Country Coach, the latest in motorhome engines is ultra low sulfur diesel. "In a nutshell, if you drove anything using this diesel through Los Angeles, the air coming out of the tailpipe would be cleaner than the air going in."

How one full-time RV became "electricity-adaptable"
Russ De Maris writes: "Not long ago we arrived at a small town RV park where shore power connections were at a premium. Every other site had an electrical box -- and users were somehow expected to share. Our next-door neighbor was already "tied into" the box closest to our site, and on popping open the cover we found he was already using the single 30-amp outlet. With our 30-amp three-prong male plug looking dead into the face of a 50-amp four-hole female receptacle, it looked as though we needed a quick brush up on 'electrical biology.' See how Russ learned to adapt.

This man's disability didn't stop him from RVing!
How do folks with disabilities go RVing? The answer is the same as everybody else, just with a few modifications. Skip Johnson lost the use of his legs many years ago but that didn’t stop him from becoming a full-time RVer. RVtravel.com blogger Jim Twamley caught up with Skip. See his report. (Don't miss the video presentation at the conclusion of the article).

GM cutting production of full-size pickups and SUVs
General Motors Corp is cutting its production of full-size pickups and SUVs in response to falling demand. In July, to boost sales of the vehicles, GM began offering zero percent financing for 60 months on full-size trucks. The company has said it will end that program Sept. 4, so if you're thinking of buying a GM truck you might want to act soon to take advantage of the special deal.

Be wary of this risk at popular RV boondocking areas
Many of us who boondock like to explore the area around the campsite to see what's there. If we come across some interesting-looking object on the ground, it's only natural to pick it up for an examination. But in some places popular with boondockers, this practice can be risky or even deadly.
Read why.

Should I buy "new" or "used" for full-time RVing?
An aspiring full-time RVer asks other full-timers for advice about whether it's best to buy a new or used RV before hitting the road.
"I've heard pros and cons about buying new, that the value plummets as soon as you drive them off the lot, etc. But I am wondering, since there would be a new vehicle warranty, if new isn't the way to go for full-timing? What do you think?" Read the responses and weigh in with one of your own if you wish.

Advice needed: "We want to travel with big dogs!"
Two soon-to-be-fulltime RVers seek advice about traveling with their king-sized pets.
"We have two large and lovable German Shepherds. We'd like to have a crate for each but it seems impossible to fit two of them into a large RV, say 40 feet, without taking up a ton of space. Any suggestions on how to deal with this issue?" Read the responses and/or leave your own.

"Should we go fulltime?" they ask.
Couples like this across the USA and Canada are asking this question. Most who are thinking of traveling full-time with an RV will have their questions answered in this wonderful 90-minute DVD. Interviews with dozens of fulltimers as well as experts on the lifestyle.

Fleetwood may exit California
Smarting from declines in profits and sales of its towable RVs, industry giant Fleetwood Enterprises has told company planners to "explore" the possibility of relocating its operations out of Riverside county, California. In an article appearing in the Greater Fort Wayne Business Weekly, published in Indiana, locals are grinning broadly at the prospects that the big RV maker may decide Indiana's 'the place you ought to be,' and may reap financial benefits from such a move. Fleetwood has indicated it would like to have its operations closer to its customer base, and adds that California is a far more expensive state to operate in.

Carbon monoxide: RVers' sneaky, silent enemy
Did you know that carbon monoxide is the leading cause of accidental poisoning in the United States? RVers are subject to this statistic because the gas can come from several common appliances in RVs. That's why every RVer should know the symptoms of carbon monoxide posioning and have a functioning, properly placed carbon monoxide detector. Read more.

Trivia
The phrase "raining cats and dogs" originated in 17th Century England. During heavy downpours of rain, many of these poor animals unfortunately drowned and their bodies would be seen floating in the rain torrents that raced through the streets. The situation gave the appearance that it had literally rained "cats and dogs" and led to the current expression.

TECH CORNER with Mark Polk
The batteries used to supply 12-volts to the RV itself are commonly referred to as house batteries. House batteries need to be deep cycle batteries that are designed to provide a steady amount of current over a long period of time. Starting batteries and marine batteries should not be used in this application. True deep cycle batteries have much thicker plates and are designed to be deeply
discharged and recharged over and over again. These batteries are rated in Amp Hours and more recently Reserve Capacity. The amp hour rating is basically how many amps the battery can deliver for how many hours before the battery is discharged. Amps times hours. In other words a battery that can deliver five amps for 20 hours before it is discharged would have a 100-amp hour rating: 5 Amps X 20 Hours = 100 Amp Hours. This same battery can deliver 20 amps for 5 hours: 20 Amps X 5 Hours = 100 Amp Hours. Reserve Capacity rating (RC) is the number of minutes at 80 degrees F that the battery can deliver 25 amps until it drops below 10.5 volts. To figure the amp hour rating you can multiply the RC rating by 60%. RC X 60%. Mark Polk (Learn about Mark Polk's RV "How-to" DVDs and eBooks.)
